Vehicle Suspension

A vehicle’s suspension system helps to keep your tyres firmly in contact with the road. It assists with braking and road handling and is essential for a safe, smooth drive.

The vehicle suspension system is essentially a complex system of components located beneath the car’s body, designed to work together to absorb the impact from minor imperfections in the road’s surface and offer you a controlled, comfortable ride.

Due to the fact that suspension systems tend to wear gradually over a period of time, problems can be difficult to detect. If you leave it too long, however, there will be a negative effect on road handling, tyre wear and braking performance.

Warning signs that you should be on the lookout for include:

  • Reduced brake efficiency

  • Reduced road holding

  • Increased wear on tyres

  • Driver discomfort

Car Steering

Steering is one of the most essential factors when it comes to safe driving, so if you notice any problems, no matter how minor, you should get your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

Steering faults cause poor handling, knocking noises and increases stress and wear on other attached parts. This can lead to a shorter vehicle life, less driving satisfaction and additional, unnecessary repair costs.

The two most common types of steering are manual steering racks and power assisted steering racks. Both types are subject to damage and both could fail. In this case they will need to be repaired or replaced.

Car steering faults

Here are some examples of how to notice car steering faults and what they could mean:

  • Steering vibrates whilst accelerating or maintaining speed:
This could mean a variety of things. It may be that your wheels are out of balance or loose, your tyres are worn or wearing unevenly or your brake discs are damaged.

  • Hearing a clucking noise whilst going over minor road imperfections, such as bumps or potholes:
Your vehicle may be suffering from damaged or broken strut bearings, broken ball joints or worn shock absorbers.

  • Hearing a loud screeching noise whilst parking or driving slowly:
This may signify problems with the power steering belt as this noise often indicates that the steering belt is either worn or too loose. It could also be that your car is running too low on power steering fluid, which may be easy to rectify unless this is due to leaks in your fluid container.

  • Difficulties steering:
If you find that you are having difficulties with your vehicle’s steering, there are a few things that could be wrong with your vehicle. Damage to certain steering components is the most likely culprit so you will need to have your strut bearings, rack mounts and other components checked. Alternatively, you may be running low on power steering fluid.

If you notice any of these problems or even just hear any unusual noises, it is important that you have your steering and suspension checked as soon as possible.
